Virginia Trooper Shot; Search For Man In WV
Staff
Bluefield
State Police in Virginia and West Virginia are looking for a man who shot a Virginia State Police trooper Friday.
Virginia State Trooper Richard Hughes was attempting to serve a warrant in Glen Lyn, Va. at the home Steven Dale Branscome. Branscome took off in his car after the trooper arrived and Trooper Hughes gave chase. It continued into Mercer County, West Virginia where Branscone wrecked his vehicle.
A foot chase followed and West Virginia State Police say Branscome shot Trooper Hughes in the neck.
Troopers in several southern West Virginia detachments spent Friday night and Saturday looking for Branscome in a wooded area near the state line. They say he is armed and dangerous.
Trooper Hughes did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released from an area hospital.
Virginia State Police planned to arrest Branscome originally on theft charges from several Virginia counties. That which does not kill me, better start fucking running.

The suspect is from my county and my agency has been searching for him for a week and a half. We got info that he stated he would not go back to prison. They said the trooper would have be paralyzed if the bullet had been a half inch closer.

They caught the suspect in Texas...
STATE TROOPER SHOOTING
Virginia Suspect Arrested in Texas After Standoff
A southwestern Virginia man accused of shooting a Virginia state trooper was arrested Sunday in northeastern Texas.
Virginia State Police officials said Steven D. Branscome was arrested about 12:40 a.m. after a brief standoff at a hotel in New Boston, Tex.
Branscome is being held in the Bowie County jail pending extradition proceedings.
State police said Texas officers also recovered a van that was stolen Wednesday from a Statesville, N.C., church. The van was in the parking lot of the hotel.
Branscome, 32, of Barren Springs, Va., faces several charges in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina, including grand larceny in at least four vehicle thefts.
He is charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment in the March 28 shooting of Virginia trooper Richard Hughes in West Virginia, just across the state border from Giles County, Va.
Hughes was not seriously injured.
