Off duty C.O. killed
Nicastro for News Police investigate the scene where off-duty Corrections officer Kenneth Duncan (below) was gunned down early Tuesday while working on his motorcycle.
Friends knew Correction Officer Kenny Duncan as an avid mechanic who thought nothing of spending hours tinkering with his beloved motorcycle.
That hobby led him early Tuesday morning to the garage of his Brooklyn home, where he was gunned down by a group of men who tried to steal his red Kawasaki, police and family said.
"He was working on his bike, the motorbike that he loved," said his sister Chichi Duncan, outside the Brookdale University Hospital emergency room. "It was a robbery; they shot him for his bike."
Investigators believe Duncan, 40, who was in the garage of his East Flatbush home about 3:15 a.m. with pal Brandon Powell, identified himself as a correction officer and tried to persuade his assailants to leave.
When they refused, Duncan reached for his off-duty service weapon, a 9-mm. handgun, and fired a pair of shots, officials said. The bullets missed.
Duncan was then shot in the face by one of the men and screamed that he had been hit, police said.
"He took one shot in the face, stood for a last few moments, looked at the person he was protecting and said, 'I'm hit,'" said Norman Seabrook, president of the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association.
The attackers ran from Duncan's Avenue A home, while Powell, who was unhurt, called 911, and Chichi Duncan raced outside to cradle her dying brother in her arms.
Kenny Duncan, a father of two teens, passed away at Brookdale a short time later. His gun was found in his garage, next to his motorcycle.
"He was a beautiful person," said Chichi Duncan. "He would do anything for anybody."
Minutes after the shooting, cops corralled nearly a dozen people at a nearby Dunkin' Donuts store on Linden Blvd. and recovered a pair of handguns, a police source said.
Investigators do not believe, however, that Duncan's attackers were among the group or that the guns found on the men at Dunkin' Donuts were used in the killing, the source said.
Duncan, who left behind a 18-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son, worked for the Correction Department for more than 17 years. He had been assigned to the Manhattan Detention Complex, officials said.
He left work at 9 p.m. Monday and, after stopping by a party, met up with Powell, a Marine, to work on the bike, his family said.
His distraught friends and colleagues arrived at his home Tuesday morning and remembered Duncan as a loving father and avid mechanic who spent hours fixing his motorcycle. For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

RIP C/O Duncan. You did what was expected of you and were successful in your life. Serve with St Michael and watch over the brethren.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.
