Pittsburgh police dog mourned
By David Brown
Saturday, May 10, 2008
More than 200 police officers and others from Pittsburgh and adjacent communities assembled today to say goodbye to Aulf, the Pittsburgh police dog killed in action during a shootout that left a Knoxville man dead.
At the end of the 40-minute service at the city police Training Academy in Highland Park, K-9 Sgt. Chris Micknowski asked for "a moment of reflection and prayer if you wish for all those who have been affected by this tragedy."
The 6-year-old German Shepard was shot and killed on Tuesday by Justin Jackson, 19, before the canine's handler and another officer returned fire, killing Jackson. The officers involved are on administrative leave while the District Attorney's Office investigates the incident.
Jackson will be buried Tuesday after funeral services at 11 a.m. at Potter's House Cathedral in Mt. Oliver.
Police Chief Nate Harper called Jackson's death "an unfortunate" but justifiable action. The shooting outraged and angered Jackson's family. They said police officers are too quick to shoot.
At today's service, Harper described Aulf as not "just a dog," but a member of the police department that died in the line of duty.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.
