A Dallas police officer is in intensive care after a metal rod pierced the windshield of his cruiser and struck him in the chest.
Officer Larry Ashley's squad car was one of two involved in a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver Thursday night in West Oak Cliff.
Dallas police said the suspect, 30-year-old Juvenal Avila, was riding around with a cooler of beer in his SUV and empty beer cans in the vehicle.
The squad cars were following each other in the 800 block of South Westmoreland Avenue about 11:30 p.m. when an SUV made a left turn in front of them without yielding, according to investigators.
The driver hit one squad car driven by Officer Davy Bass. That's when Officer Ashley, driving the second car, swerved to avoid the crash and slammed into an iron fence.
Investigators said the police cruisers were traveling the speed limit and did not have lights or sirens on.
Police said beer cans flew out of the SUV when it slammed into the squad car and there were cans scattered around the crash scene.
Officer Ashley was taken to the hospital where he was still being treated Friday afternoon. Police said an iron fence rod pierced the officer's windshield and struck him the chest, bruising his heart.
A police spokesman said the officer's bulletproof vest helped reduce the impact of the rod.
Officer Bass was also injured but has been treated at a hospital and released.
Avila was also treated at the hospital. He is now facing intoxication assault charges in the case.

Officer Ashley used to work in our town, I'm told... One of his friends here said that he has severe bruising around his heart (and possibly in his heart), where the metal pole struck. If he hadn't had his vest on, it would have impaled him in the heart and killed him, most likely.
They're hoping for a complete recovery, but he's not out of the woods, apparently.
