Retired Deputy Dies In Catalina SCUBA Accident
POSTED: 8:43 am PDT June 2, 2008
UPDATED: 9:35 am PDT June 2, 2008
AVALON, Calif. -- A retired Riverside County sheriff's sergeant is dead after a weekend scuba diving accident off Santa Catalina Island.
A Los Angeles County sheriff's dispatcher said David Pike, 50, was diving with an instructor in about 20 feet of water Saturday at Casino Point Underwater Park when he ran into trouble.
Shortly after giving the instructor a thumbs-up signal, Pike floated to the surface, not breathing. He was given CPR and taken by paramedics to a hyperbaric chamber on the island. He remained unresponsive and was declared dead a couple hours later. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/16458839/detail.html

** Dave died only 21 days after retiring from RSO. He worked the county area surrounding my city. He will definitely be missed.

That has to suck. It appears that he was doing something he loved to do. Condolences to his family and coworkers.

As a scuba diver myself 20 ft is within recreational limits. It's supposed to be within the limits of darting to the surface to seek help safely. I am curious if another medical condition like heart problems from all the job stress hurt him.
My prayers are with his family.........................
