Man suspected of shooting officer is killed in gunbattle on freeway

ANAHEIM – There was mayhem on state Route 91 yesterday morning as police chased a man suspected of exposing himself to children outside Disneyland and of shooting an officer who tried to arrest him Sunday. In the end, the suspect was shot dead, his nude body splayed on the roadway, and a female motorist, an innocent bystander, was shot and wounded.

The gunman's identity was not released, but police Sgt. Rick Martinez said he had a lengthy criminal record and an outstanding arrest warrant. The man was in his 40s.
A female motorist was hospitalized with superficial bullet wounds. It wasn't clear if she was wounded by gunfire from the suspect or police.

The shooting occurred just after midnight and closed Route 91 in northern Orange County until about 9 a.m.

Police Sgt. Tim Schmidt said the man was armed with a handgun. He said officers fired their weapons because the man got out of his car, took positions behind other vehicles and shot at police.

The freeway shootout ended a chain of events that began early Sunday with a report of a man exposing himself at a motel on Harbor Boulevard, about a half-mile south of Disneyland.

A responding officer was shot in the upper thigh when the man fired a gun out of the window of his car as he fled the motel, police said. The officer was treated and released from a hospital Sunday night, Martinez said.

Police later spotted the suspect and tried to pull him over on Route 91, but he sped away and crashed into several vehicles as he tried to barrel through traffic, police said.
