Update-Jackson MS Officer Shot
From what I have heard, Collier was shot in the face through the windshield of his car, then one of the turds walked up and shot him two more times in the torso while he was down. He did return fire. He is stable with more surgery expected tomorrow. There are two suspects in custody.

JPD Officer Shot in West Jackson

A Jackson police officer was shot while pursuing armed robbery suspects. The robbery happened at Mississippi Title Loan on Highway 80 just past Valley Street.
Officers chased the suspects to Clinton Boulevard near Lakewood Memorial Parks, where the officer was shot. Police say the suspects got away in the officers car, which was found on Norman and Montgomery.
The officer shot is Dwayne Collier, a 6 year veteran of the force.
Witnesses say the car he was pursuing sped off the road into a ravine.
Police say officer Collier got out of the car and was shot several times.
According to police, Collier was the only officer on the scene during the chase. They say backup arrived shortly after the shooting.
Jackson Police spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Scott says "This is not something you plan for or hope for as a police officer. This just goes to show you how dangerous a job it is. We want to make sure we pray for the fallen officer and his family."
Police say a gold-colored vehicle has also been involved in several other robberies. They say those robberies are under investigation.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."

Doctor: JPD officer suffers stroke
By Kathleen Baydala
kbaydala@clarionledger.comThe Jackson officer shot Monday while pursuing two robbery suspects is making some improvement at the hospital but cannot move the right side of his body, his surgeon said today.
The bullet that struck DeWayne Collier in the head missed his brain but hit his carotid artery and caused a stroke, said University of Mississippi Medical Center chief trauma surgeon John Porter.
“As with any stroke, some people regain all mobility, some half and some none. It’s too early to tell,” Porter said.
Collier’s condition was updated this afternoon from critical to serious. A fragment of the bullet was removed from behind his ear.
Collier, 37, also will have the first of several, serious surgeries Wednesday to repair segments of his intestines damaged by another bullet that pierced his abdomen. That bullet will not be removed.
The officer was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, but the bullet struck his left flank, an area not fully covered by the armor.
Collier is still hooked up to a ventilator to help his breathing, and therefore cannot speak. Doctors are keeping him heavily sedated, but he is “aware” when he is awake, Porter said.
“There are no guarantees. The main thing is each day he does well is a good day,” Porter said. “But there can be a set back at any moment. I don’ want there to be false hope.”

Suspects in officer's shooting have lengthy records
By Kathleen Baydala
kaydala@clarionledger.comThe two men charged Monday with shooting a Jackson police officer have criminal records and were both on probation.
Antonio Turner, 23, of Brandon has previous car burglary and drug possession convictions in Rankin and Hinds counties, according to Mississippi Department of Corrections records.
Records also show Cornelius Black, 20, of Jackson recently had been convicted of house burglary in Hinds County.
Turner was sentenced in March 2005 to three years and six months in prison for car burglary and cocaine possession in Rankin County. In January 2006, he was paroled to the Hinds County Detention Center, where he awaited trial for another car burglary charge.
“He never made it to the streets,” MDOC spokeswoman Tara Booth said.
Turner was convicted of the Hinds County burglary charge and was sentenced to two years. In November 2006, he got out on earned release supervision and transitioned into probation in March 2007.
Booth said Turner was reporting to his probation officer as required.
Black was sentenced to house arrest in Issaquena County on Jan. 22 for a Hinds County house burglary and transitioned into probation that was to last two years. He also was consistently reporting to his probation officer, Booth said.
Jackson police officials have accused Turner and Black of shooting officer DeWayne Collier on Monday as they fled arrest for an earlier attempted robbery of a business in west Jackson.
Both men face a slew of charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer. They are being held without bond at the Hinds County Detention Center pending their initial appearances in Jackson Municipal Court.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."
