Unhappy Customs Agent Killed - Suspect Still At-Large

Customs agent killed outside Pembroke Pines post office as daughter watches
By Macollvie Jean-François, Robert Nolin and Brian Haas | Sun-Sentinel.com
    5:51 PM EDT, August 5, 2008

PEMBROKE PINES, Florida - Hundreds of law enforcement officers using a Blackhawk helicopter fanned across South Florida today to hunt for the gunman accused of killing a customs agent in broad daylight during an argument in a post office parking lot.

Donald Pettit, 52, was with his daughter when he was shot about 8:55 a.m., said Carlos Baixauli, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Pettit was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood in critical condition. Police spokesman Sgt. Bryan Davis announced Pettit's death at around noon.

Pettit was shot in the head after he and the gunman "got into some type of argument" outside the postal service's South Florida Processing and Distribution Center at Pines Boulevard and Dykes Road, Deputy Police Chief Mike Segarra said.

The agent's daughter was in his car and observed what happened, but she was unhurt, Segarra said. Officers responding to the shooting found Pettit laying next to his black Chrysler 300 sedan.

Pettit is a Pembroke Pines resident who is married and has two children, Segarra said.

Davis said police are looking for the suspect, who was described as between 50-60 years old, about 6 feet tall, with a full head of gray or white hair. He was wearing a short-sleeve, green plaid shirt.

The suspect was last seen driving east on Pines Boulevard in a late model gray-green Chrysler 300 four-door sedan with possible tinted windows.

Patsy Skelley, who said she was Pettit's ex-wife, said his sister called her this morning.

"She just said he got shot in the head," said Skelley, who is in Kentucky. "I'm shocked, I don't really know what to say. It is tragic. I feel bad."

Skelley said she and Pettit divorced 18 years ago, but she kept in regular contact with his family.

She said that Pettit's mother died around this time last year, making today's loss even harder for relatives to bear.

"This is really bad for the family," she said.

A security guard at the gate of the Encantada community where Pettit lived said only family were being permitted to enter.

About 200 federal, state and local law enforcement agents were expected to participate in a dragnet for the gunman, Davis said.

Officers canvassed businesses in the area, looking for any surveillance video tape that might show the shooting or the suspect.

A statewide alert also was issued.

About a hundred officers assembled at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office near the post office, many of them in bullet-resistant vests. A Blackhawk helicopter from the federal Department of Homeland Security made several stops there to pick up officers.

"We're just going to saturate the area," Davis said. "We'll just start turning over every rock."

At Memorial Hospital, a steady trickle of officers walked through the emergency room where the agent was taken. None would comment.

The center is one of three mail distribution centers in South Florida. The others are in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at at 954-493-TIPS, Pembroke Pines police, 954-431-2225, or online: www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

This happened about a 1/4 mile or less from my home. They think it was a case of road rage. I was outiside washing my wifes car and my patrol car when some officers came to my home to see if I knew what had happened. They filled me in, but unfortunatly I live in a different county than where I work so I couldn't assist them. Maybe once I have the dog they will extend my mutual aid to include this county.

My thoughts and prayers to this ofiicers family, friends, and Dept.

Person Of Interest In Agent's Shooting In Custody
Law Enforcement Converges On Dialysis Center
    POSTED: 3:07 pm EDT August 6, 2008
    UPDATED: 3:42 pm EDT August 6, 2008

DAVIE, Fla. -- Police said they have taken into custody a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a federal agent outside a Pembroke Pines post office.

SWAT team members converged upon a dialysis center near State Road 84 and Hiatus Road where a person of interest was believed to be Wednesday, according to law enforcement personnel at the command center.

A doctor at the dialysis center tipped off law enforcement after seeing someone who matched the description of a sketch released by authorities after Tuesday's shooting.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer Donald Pettit, 52, was killed by a single shot to the head while his 12-year-old daughter, who was sitting nearby, witnessed the shooting.

On Wednesday, Pettit's wife, Ileana, issued a tearful plea to the community to help find her husband's killer.

Police officers from all over South Florida and federal agents worked into Tuesday night to find the man who killed 52-year-old Donald Pettit, a U.S. Customs agent.

Pembroke Pines Police released a sketch of the man they said shot and killed the agent. They also announced a $275,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in Pettit's killing.

Surveillance pictures taken at a WalMart blocks from the scene show a silver-green Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger speeding southbound on Southwest 184th Avenue just moments after Pettit was shot.

That is the same vehicle description given to investigators by his daughter, whom one witness said started making calls with her cell phone after seeing her father's lifeless body on the ground.

According to police, Pettit and the gunman were involved in an altercation in the parking lot of the South Florida Mail Processing facility near Dykes Road and Pines Boulevard. Pettit was standing outside his car when the fight began. His daughter was sitting inside.

Pettit was off duty and not armed. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood but did not survive.

Police said they would not give up on finding the killer.

"We're going to find this guy, no doubt in my mind," said Pembroke Pines Deputy Chief Mike Segarra.

Pettit was in the U.S. Army for 20 years. He went on to serve as a criminal investigator for the Food and Drug Administration. In January, he became an internal affairs investigator with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
He leaves behind a wife and two children who live in Pembroke Pines.
