*Update*Mahnomen County (MN) Deputy Down
Not a good month up here. We lost one deputy to a heart attack and a small town police chief to a head injury after he slipped on ice at his home. The prognosis doesn't sound good for the deputy that was shot this morning. Apparently (from news reports) there was a report of a DK driver leaving a casino around 0430 hours. The vehicle was found abandoned a little while later. Around 0630, a shots fired call was received. The deputy was going to interview a neighbor/witness and did not answer his radio when his partner tried to raise him. The partner responded to the scene and found the deputy, in the driveway, shot several times

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- SWAT teams descended on the small northwestern Minnesota town of Mahnomen after a sheriff's deputy was shot Wednesday near the Mahnomen County Courthouse.
Two male suspects were holed up in a mobile home near the shooting about a block west of the courthouse in downtown Mahnomen, County Attorney Julie Bruggeman said. She had no details on what led to the shooting.
The victim, a Mahnomen County sheriff's deputy, was airlifted to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D. There was no immediate word on his condition.
The Red River Valley SWAT Team -- made up of members of the Cass and Clay County sheriffs' offices, West Fargo, Fargo and Moorhead police -- was sent to the scene, Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also sent its SWAT team, its Crime Scene Team and investigators. Other law officers also responded.
The Mahnomen County sheriff's office had no immediate comment. A news conference was planned for Wednesday morning.
The Mahnomen public school, a few blocks from the shooting, was locked down as a precaution, Superintendent Walt Aanenson said. Doors were locked and students were not being allowed to leave the school unless it's an emergency, he said.
Aanenson said the school of about 600 students learned of the shooting as buses were arriving Wednesday morning.
Mahnomen is about 60 miles northeast of Fargo, N.D.

An update
MAHNOMEN, Minn. (AP) ―
The Mahnomen County sheriff says he thinks wounded Deputy Christopher Dewey will pull through.
Sheriff Doug Krier says he saw Dewey at the hospital Wednesday night. Krier says Dewey would respond to a doctor's verbal commands but had no movement on his left side.
The sheriff says Dewey remains in a medically induced coma and is still critical but stable at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
The 26-year-old deputy was shot in the abdomen and head Wednesday morning in Mahnomen. Two suspects are in jail, with charges pending.
The shooting resulted in a nine-hour standoff in the northwestern Minnesota town. The sheriff says more than 130 officers from various agencies were at the scene.
The sheriff says Dewey remains in a medically induced coma and is still critical but stable at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D. Another person, 27-year-old Daniel Kurt Vernier, had been taken into custody earlier in the day, said Dave Bjerga, assistant superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
