Officials: 2 Fla. sheriff's deputies fatally shot

Officials: 2 Fla. sheriff's deputies fatally shot
    35 minutes ago
CRESTVIEW, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say two north Florida sheriff's deputies were shot and killed by a suspect who was later fatally shot by deputies.
The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday when the two Okaloosa County deputies went to Shoal River Sporting Clays and Shooting Center in response to a call, said Michele Nicholson, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
Authorities say the suspect shot both deputies and took off toward neighboring Walton County, where he was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies.
A man who answered the telephone at the shooting center near Crestview said he had no comment on the shooting.
Deputies Burt Lopez and Deputy Warren "Skip" York were pronounced dead after being airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, about 45 miles away, the sheriff's office said.
A news release from the sheriff's office identified their killer as Joshua Cartwright, 28, of Fort Walton Beach.
The sheriff's office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which continue to investigate the incident, did not immediately release other details about Cartwright or why the deputies were called to the shooting range.
Another Okaloosa County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed in August following a standoff with a man who had barricaded himself inside a home.
Okaloosa County Sheriff Charles Morris was suspended by Gov. Charlie Crist in February after he was arrested by FBI agents while on a gambling trip to Las Vegas.
Morris and his former office manager were indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday on theft, money laundering and conspiracy charges. Prosecutors allege Morris and his former office manager, Teresa Adams, created fictitious bonuses for sheriff's department employees then pocketed some of the money.

    Rest in peace Brothers.

Please refer to the Taser thread, and read my replies on why it is ok to have your weapon drawn when coming upon a possible dangerous confrontation. I don't know the circumstances, but weapon at the ready beats a holstered weapon everytime. I draw my weapon 50 times in front of the mirror before I ever leave the house. It goes back in the holster just as easy as it comes out.
    The six o'clock rule
I tell them to act according to the six o'clock rule, a phrase that causes most of them to say, "Huh?"
I tell them to use this little test before they decide to do something. If they were to do what they're thinking about, and it became the lead story on the six o'clock news, would they be proud? Would their department be proud, and would their family be proud? It's a simple way to live your life both personally and professionally.

    Rest in peace.

My wife and I are currently on vacation in Seagrove Beach. We will travel through Okaloosa county on the way home and hope to find a way to offer our condolences in person to at least some of the men and women of the agency.

And, in these times, the advice from JSO85360 concerning unholstering is especially pertinent.
    Be kind, be courteous . . .

and have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

I do find it in poor taste on part of the journalist to end the announcement with information about their last Sheriff and office manager. Very poor taste and uncalled for as it has NOTHING to do with their deaths.

And you would expect more from the media?

"One day while traveling through a combat zone, Jesse Jackson, Dan Rather, and Cokie Roberts, along with their Marine Corp guide, were captured by terrorists. They were tied up, led to the village and brought before the chief.
The chief said, "I am familiar with your western custom of granting the condemned a last wish. Before we kill you and drag your burning bodies through the street, do you have any last requests?"
Dan Rather said, "Well, I'm a Texan; so I'd like one last bowlful of hot, spicy chili."
The chief nodded to an underling, who left and returned with the chili. Rather ate it all and said, "Now I can die content."
Jesse Jackson said, "You know, the thing in this life I am proudest of is my work on behalf of the poor and oppressed. So before I go, I want to sing "We Shall Overcome" one last time."
The chief said, "Go right ahead, we're listening."
Jackson sang the song, and then said, "Now I can die in peace."
Cokie Roberts said, "I'm a reporter to the end. I want to take out my tape recorder and describe the scene here and what's about to happen. Maybe someday someon will hear it and know that I was on the job 'til the end."
The chief directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder, and Roberts dictated some comments. She then said, "Now I can die happy."
The chief turned and said, "And now, Mr. Marine, what is your final wish?"

"Kick me in the ass," said the Marine.
"What?" said the chief. "Will you mock us in your last hour?"
"No, I'm not kidding. I want you to kick me in the ass," insisted the Marine.
So the chief shoved him into the open, and kicked him in the ass.
The Marine went sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9 mm pistol from his waistband, and shot the chief dead. In the resulting confusion, he leapt to his knapsack, pulled out his M4 carbine, and sprayed the terrorists with gunfire. In a flash, they were dead or fleeing for their lives.
As the Marine was untying the others, they asked him, "Why didn't you just shoot them before they scared us all, and made us fear for our life? Why did you ask them to kick you in the ass?"
"What!?" said the Marine, "And have the liberal media call ME the aggressor?!?"

Was this a Marine or a Navy SEAL. Going by what I have heard lately between Marcus Luttrell surviving a Taliban ambush, later getting his therapy dog shot and the guys who shot those pirates on the high seas off the coast of Somalia, I can't help but wonder. Since the Marines are part of the Navy, I guess it doesn't matter. Both are right on target when it comes to defending our country and taking the bad guys out.
