A sheriff's detective is dead and three deputies injured after a major crash Tuesday afternoon. Their suburban collided with an 18-wheeler on Highway 1 South.
The Beauregard sheriff's department is mourning the loss of one of their own. While doctors watch over three injured deputies.
It's a massive crash, leaving a sheriff's detective dead. "It kind of shook me. For a moment, I had to get myself together," Lt. Darwin Jones, with Caddo Sheriff Department said.
Officials say a suburban with four Beauregard sheriff employees collided with an 18 wheeler at HW 1 South, killing Detective Robert Beane, a 14 year veteran. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective Beane's family who leaves behind a wife and child" Chief Deputy Joe Toler of Beauregard sheriff department said.
By air and land, crews rushed three other victims to LSU health sciences. "He's with family and friends and his wife is here and I think he'll pull through." Officials say deputy Dale Sharpe, who rode in the passenger seat is in critical condition. Deputies Lance Grant and Brian Leedom are stable.
Just before the crash, all four attended a tactical training conference. "It hits home, I just met these guys yesterday but I feel like I lost a brother."
A crowd of support marched to the hospital. Jones says 20 law enforcement agencies visited, while others called. "I've had calls from as far away as New Orleans asking what they can do. It's a tragic event and what you're seeing is a great outpour for these guys."
Officials say the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but there were many witnesses. Also, that the driver of the 18 wheeler is OK.

Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and like it, never really care for anything else.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.
