Pennsylvania State Trooper shot in the line of duty and killed,
To all AAST members:
We regret to inform you of the line of duty shooting death of Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Joshua D. Miller, Troop N, Swiftwater, on June 7, 2009. Trooper Miller was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a kidnapping suspect. Trooper Robert J. Lombardo was also shot during the exchange of gunfire and is currently listed in satisfactory condition at Community Medical Center (CMC) in Scranton , where he is being treated for his wounds.
At 7:45 p.m. on June 7th, members of the Nazareth Police Department responded to a report of a protection-from-abuse order violation involving a weapon. As they arrived, the suspect took a 9-year-old boy from his mother at gunpoint and fled the location in a vehicle, leading to a 40 mile vehicle pursuit.
The suspect's vehicle was stopped in Coolbaugh Township ( Monroe County ) when members of the Pennsylvania State Police utilized the PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to crash. Following the crash, the suspect opened fire on officers, killing Trooper Miller and wounding Trooper Lombardo. The suspect was also killed during the exchange of gunfire.
Trooper Miller was assigned to the Swiftwater State Police Barracks. He is survived by his wife, Angela, and three children.
Funeral arrangements and other information can be obtained from the Pennsylvania State Police at (717) 783-5556.
Please keep the Miller family as well as the Pennsylvania State Police in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
With Honor and Respect,

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.
