A state police spokesman says a state trooper is being treated at a Missouri hospital after he was wounded in an arm Monday night by a shotgun blast fired by an occupant of a car he had just stopped for a routine traffic violation.
State police spokesman Bill Sadler said the trooper, 56-year-old Corporal Robert L. Meek, returned the fire and wounded one of three people who were in the car. Sadler said the exchange of shots occurred about 8:35 Monday night on a side road a short distance from U.S. 65 in the Bellefonte community about five miles south of Harrison.
According to Sadler, the arm injury suffered by Meek is not believed to be life-threatening. Sadler said he did not know which arm received the shotgun blast. Sadler said Meek was first taken to North Arkansas Regional Medical Center at Harrison, and then transferred to a hospital at Springfield, Missouri.
Sadler said Meek returned fire with his service pistol, inflicting a wound also not believed to be life-threatening. He said the wounded person was also taken to the Harrison hospital and then transferred to a Springfield hospital.
According to Sadler, the three in the car were arrested by other officers who arrived at the scene shortly after the exchange of shots. He said two of those arrested were taken into custody at the scene, while a brief manhunt had to be carried out to find one person who had fled. Sadler said he did not know the names, sexes or ages of those arrested.
He said Meek, a 31-year veteran of the state police, was attempting to stop a vehicle that had been speeding.

Wishing a speedy recovery to the officer, his guardian angel was with him that day.

I wish him the best and speediest recovery. I "salute", and admire him for the balls he had in response to the attack.

An update to the story, the trooper was able to take cover behind his cruiser which probably saved his life. The trooper is in good condition.
