A Santa Rosa police officer was struck by a car and seriously injured as she chased a suspect on foot across Santa Rosa Avenue on Sunday shortly after 5:30 p.m.
A black BMW hit the officer, who smashed into the windshield and was thrown several feet to the pavement. She lay unresponsive with a severe head injury, according to eyewitnesses.
The officer, who police refused to identify, was taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
The chase began in the parking lot of Denny's after the officer recognized a man wanted in connection with a felony crime, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The suspect fled, leaving the Denny's lot and running across the Chevron gas station where he entered traffic on Santa Rosa Avenue near the Colgan Avenue intersection.
The officer pursued him. She had nearly crossed the busy street when she was hit by the northbound BMW.
Dozens of people witnessed the crash.
“I heard the bang. It sounded like two cars colliding. But it wasn't,” said Brian Messenger, who saw the chase from the balcony of the Redwood Inn. “It wasn't a good scene.”
A somber mood clouded the police station Sunday evening.
“Everybody is very concerned, waiting to hear any good sign that she is going to be OK,” said Sergeant Lisa Banayat, spokeswoman for the department. “We're still shocked by it.”
Banayat declined to provide the officer's name, saying that the department wanted to ensure all her family members had been notified first.
Police closed Santa Rosa Avenue in both directions as emergency crews responded to the officer and conducted an investigation. The street was expected to remain closed in both directions until midnight, Banayat said.
The fleeing suspect was detained by a man at a nearby convenience store, according to people in the area.
“The customer left his goods and ran out and grabbed the guy until police arrived,” said Hassan Mahood, clerk at the Steel Deli & Liquor.
The suspect was being interviewed late Sunday night by Santa Rosa police. The department declined to release his name until he was booked, Banayat said.'Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a
