My condolences. I wish every LE agency could afford to get whatever bullet proof equipment they would need to prevent incidents like this from happening.

The deceased officer was a longtime veteran and an FTO. He and his trainee were sitting at the curb in a fairly quiet neighborhood going over the daily sheet. The female trainee was driving and the FTO was in the passanger's seat.
A small, light colored car pulled up next to the cruiser and w/o warning of any kind, emptied a magazine into the front seat. The vet was DRT but the trainee, although hit, managed to get out of the cruiser and return fire. Not known at this time whether she hit anything. She then put out a "Help the Officer" and the chief dispatcher turned it into an "All City" .
SPD runs a LOT of cops at night and they turned out in the dozens (somewhere around 50 units) but nothing could be found of the suspect vehicle. The crime scene was processed and finally cleared late this morning.
They do have some info but right now, nobody is saying squat and it is not known how significant the info they do have is.
Three possibilities:
Personal hit (someone outside the criminal world wanted that specific officer dead)....always a possibility but not likely.
Whack job....again always a possibility but not likely.
Emerging gang war/gang related....Mac likes this one best.
Right now, a lot of people are getting some attention they no doubt deserve.

Wow, the trainee did great work under terrifying circumstances. I hope she recovers quickly, and that those responsible for the murder of her FTO are caught.

Any leads on the investigation? It does sound like a gang related initiation but you just never know, there are plenty of wackos out there and this time of the year they get braver.
Speedy recovery to the rookie, did a great job, hope your shots made some contact and leads to the arrests.

Can't go into much. Likely gang related but working on that.
Grim day in these parts.

Now looking more and more like a planned gang hit. The shooter's car approached from the rear, opened fire and then BACKED away from the cruiser so the dash cam wouldn't see the car. Apparently two folks in the suspect vehicle. Still no arrests....
