Death of California Highway Patrol Officer

All AAST Members:
We are saddened to inform you of the death of California Highway Patrol Officer Jarrod John Martinez, who was killed in an on-duty motorcycle crash on Thursday, October 29, 2009.
Officer Martinez was riding home from traffic court on his personal motorcycle when the fatal collision occurred. Martinez was riding west on Steele Street in Santa Barbara and was approaching the intersection of Foxen Canyon Road about 12:15 p.m., when a vehicle driving the opposite direction entered his lane of traffic heading the wrong way while attempting to make a left turn. Officer Martinez braked to avoid the collision but his motorcycle slid from under him and he struck the vehicle. He was then dragged approximately 50 feet.
Officer Martinez was one day shy of his one year anniversary with the California Highway Patrol. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and 4-year-old daughter Julia.
