An Ohio police officer is recovering from his injuries after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop Saturday.
Lt. John Lambert is in fair condition this morning at MetroHealth Medical Center after a terrifying crash that was caught on his dashboard camera.
Lt. Lambert responded to a one-vehicle traffic accident on I-480 eastbound.
While he assisted the driver, who spun out into traffic due to icy road conditions, another vehicle lost control and hit him.
Lt. Lambert was struck and thrown over the guardrail while trying to prevent the 18-year-old driver from being hit by the oncoming vehicle.
"As Lt. Lambert looked up, he noticed the vehicle coming at him," said Lt. Joseph Zawislan of the Brooklyn Heights police department. "He turned to push the other gentleman out of the way as he tired to jump over the guardrail."
Police say Lt. Lambert lost consciousness for four minutes, and was taken to MetroHealth Medical center.
According to Lt. Zawislan, Lambert has a broken pelvis and fractured eye socket.
He has worked on the police force for 22 years.
"He was in good spirits," Lt. Zawislan said. "At this point, it doesn't seem like he's going to need surgery.
The accident is still under investigation.
No alcohol or drugs were involved.
