Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.

A female Monroe County sheriff's deputy was on her way to aid another officer Tuesday night when she died in a car accident in Key Largo.
Road patrol Deputy Melissa Powers, 36, was driving north on U.S. 1 with her flashing emergency lights and siren on to check on an officer who could not be reached on his police radio. The accident occured about 10:20 p.m. at mile marker 101.8, according to the sheriff's office.
The roads were slick from a rainstorm when Powers lost control of her cruiser while trying to avoid another vehicle. Her car spun around and hit a parked tractor-trailer. When emergency workers arrived, they found Powers pinned inside her patrol car. She was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where she was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m.
The officer that Powers was looking for was fine. He had switched his radio to a different channel and was temporarily out of touch on the dispatch channel, according to the sheriff's office report.
Powers had served with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office since December 2006 and was currently working road patrol in Key Largo. She previously worked for the Florida Department of Corrections.
She is survived by her longtime boyfriend, Detective Lazaro Guerrero with the Homestead Police Department, daughter Autumn Guerrero and stepson Lexus Guerrero.
Powers is the fifth deputy to be killed in the line of duty in a traffic accident in the Florida Keys. The others are: Deputy David Cormier, killed in 1989; Deputy Michael Alexander in 1998; Deputy Robin Tanner in 2007 and Deputy Nick Pham in 2008.
The only other in-the-line-of-duty deaths for the sheriff's office occurred more than a century ago. Deputy and Game Warden Guy Bradley was shot by poachers in the Everglades in 1905, and Deputy Frank Adams was shot while breaking up an altercation in Key West in 1901.
