PASO ROBLES - A officer with the Temple CHP is in critical condition after being hit by a car.
It happened Sunday evening before 6:00 at South River Road, near Spanish Camp. The officer was responding to a call of vehicle vs. tree. When the officer arrived at the scene, all they found was an abandoned vehicle. The officer then called for a tow truck to the scene.
While the officer was waiting for the truck, a Toyota Corolla, that was driving fast, came down the roadway. For unknown reasons, the driver did not see the CHP vehicle and hit the rear of it. The CHP vehicle was pushed forward and hit the officer. According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department, the officer flew into the air and landed on the Toyota which had stopped in the northbound lane.
The officer was airlifted to Twin Cities Hospital where they are in critical condition. No arrests have been made and the CHP says it will be on the scene for several hours.

I haven't been to California in years, and have no intention to change that - so I don't know the answers to a few questions....
1. Is CHP making offside contacts?
2. How many of their deaths are related to pursuits?
3. How does the CHP accident rate compare to the SO's and PD's?I'm your huckleberry...

The California Highway Patrol has identified the officer who was hit and killed in Paso Robles.
The CHP says Officer Brett Oswald, 47, was responding to an abandoned vehicle in the middle of South River Road in Paso Robles Sunday night when he was hit by another car.
Officers say a 22-year-old Atascadero woman, who has not been identified, was speeding Northbound on River Road, when she crossed the double yellow lines, hitting the driver's door of the patrol car, which then hit Officer Oswald.
The CHP says Oswald died at the hospital from his injuries. The 22-year-old woman suffered minor injuries. Officers say so far, no arrests have been made.

In response to item 1 above:
It would require alot of research to determine what approach side was utilized during an assault or vehicular incident that resulted in a fatality.
In response to item 2 above:
20 of the fatalities were directly related to a pursuit.
In response to item 3 above:
In comparison, the LAPD was formed in 1869. They have lost 200 officers in the line of duty. 99 of those involved gunfire and 4 involved vehicular assault.
The LASO was formed in 1850. They have lost 110 deputies in the line of duty. 56 involved gunfire and 6 involved vehicular assault.
The CHP was formed in 1929. They have lost 224 officers in the line of duty. 40 involved gunfire and 29 involved vehicular assault.
