George County Sheriff Gary Welford is in critical condition (*He later died) after he was run over by a suspect vehicle during a chase.
Sheriff Welford, who was life flighted to USA Medical Center in Mobile, got out of his car to throw spikes when the susepct ran him over, according to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.
Byrd believes this was suspect wanted on a drug charge.
The suspect's vehicle was found in Greene County on Bexley Road.
At this hour, investigators from George, Greene and Jackson Counties are searching a wooded area for the suspect.

A pursuit ensued and Welford had gotten in front of the truck and was putting spike sticks in the road to stop the suspects. He was off to the side of the road in the ditch on the narrow, winding road when the speeding truck left the road, striking him nearly dead center of the front of the pickup and running over him.
