Taylor Officer Dies After Hit-And-Run - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit
TAYLOR, Mich. -- A Taylor police officer died Tuesday after being struck in a hit-and-run crash while assisting a driver whose vehicle stalled.
Taylor police are seeking the public’s help to identify the hit-and-run driver and vehicle.
The crash happened at 8:59 p.m. on the shoulder of westbound Interstate 94 at Monroe in Taylor.
Police told Local 4 that the slain officer was identified as Lt. Dan Kromer. The auxiliary officer was assisting a motorist whose vehicle had stalled. Witnesses said Kromer and the idled car were hit by a white car.
Police said the hit-and-run car fled west on I-94 and exited at Telegraph Road.
The white car is described as a late 1990s or early 2000 model Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis or a similar-looking model, police said.
Investigators said the vehicle will have heavy damage to the front end, passenger-side headlight and turn signal, and heavy damage to the windshield.
Police said the car could have maroon paint that came from the crash with the stalled car.
A witness told police that the suspect car had a Michigan “sunset-style” license plate.
Kromer died early Wednesday morning from injuries he sustained from the hit-and-run. The driver of the stalled vehicle was not injured.
The accident had the right lanes of westbound I-94 at Telegraph Road shut down.
Local 4 has learned Kromer he has been on the auxiliary force, which is usually the part-time reserves of a regular police force, for more than 20 years.
Auxiliary officers are required to undergo 220 hours of police training and they can carry a weapon, assist motorists and make citizen's arrests.
Kromer's death is the second on the Taylor police force this summer. Cpl. Matthew Edwards, 31, was killed in a gun battle in July during a check on a report of a home invasion.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Taylor Police Department at 734-287-6611.

R.I.P. Brother...
On a footnote....My FOP Chapter put out some saddening news about how Lt. Kromers wife learned of this trajedy. Apparently Mrs. Kromer learned of her husbands death by reading a Facebook posting made by an officer from a neighboring agency.
I cannot imagine the pain she must have felt to read it that way.
Insert witty comment and disclaimer here.

Rest in peace , Lt. Kromer. Condolences to family , friends and colleagues. It saddens me greatly that his wife was informed of her husband's passing by reading about it on a Facebook posting. Think people.SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM-Ex-Sheriff Martin Howe to Will Kane in "High Noon"
