Ruston officer survives being shot three times
RUSTON — A Ruston Louisiana police officer remained in stable condition Monday after being shot three times while responding to a suspicious vehicle call on the Interstate 20 south service road in Ruston.
Cpl. Marchale Canty, a 12-year veteran of the police department, was responding to the call around 1:20 a.m. Monday at Ambrose Automotive in Ruston when an unidentified black male opened fire on Canty with a large-caliber handgun. Canty was shot in the upper chest, the lower abdomen and just above his right wrist, according to Ruston Police Chief Stephen Rogers.
The department had no leads in the case at press time.
"He's doing very good," Rogers said. "The wounds were not lethal and they didn't hit any vital organs."
According to Rogers, a Lincoln Parish Sheriff's deputy contacted the department about a suspicious vehicle with headlights on at the location. Since the deputy was traveling on I-20, he was unable to exit the interstate and investigate it, Rogers said.
The vehicle is a late model, dark blue Dodge Durango with a temporary tag in the window.
"We believe when (Canty) stepped out of his vehicle he was shot," Rogers said. "He was able to get to his car and call for assistance."
Canty was not wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting. The department encourages its officers to wear chest protection and most do, Rogers said.

SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM-Ex-Sheriff Martin Howe to Will Kane in "High Noon"
"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.
