Phoenix PD Sgt.
Phoenix police sergeant shot, killedPHOENIX - A Phoenix police sergeant was found shot to death in Phoenix late Monday, and the suspect or suspects remain on the loose.
Phoenix Police Sergeant Trent Crump said they were unable to locate the sergeant Monday night and calls were put out in efforts to find the sergeant.
Just before 11 p.m., Capitol police officers and security located an abandoned Phoenix police car in a parking lot in the area of 18th Avenue and Jackson Street, said Crump.
The sergeant was found shortly after in a dirt field near railroad tracks with a fatal gunshot wound, according to police.
A source says there is evidence of a struggle.
Crump said the sergeant’s identity will not be released pending next of kin notification.
The area is on lockdown while officers search for the suspect or suspects. Traffic is restricted on Jackson from 19th Avenue to 17th Avenue and Buchanan from 19th Avenue to 17th Avenue.
The sergeant's body was transported from the scene around 9:20 a.m.
Two guns have been recovered and taken in as evidence.
Police are working with limited information and further details have not been released. Police are hoping that security cameras in the area will help them in their search for a suspect, or suspects.
Police are expected to hold a briefing later today.
This is the first Phoenix police sergeant to be killed since 1990. The last one was killed in a car accident.
