(KSDK) - A Cahokia, Illinois, police officer has died after a head-on accident involving his cruiser.
It happened around 2:15 a.m. Monday on Route 3 near Queeny Avenue.
Officer Jeremy Chambers' cruiser hit a pickup truck and his vehicle overturned, trapping him inside. Chambers, 26, was airlifted to an area hospital, where he later died. He was a two-year veteran of the department.
Police officials say it appears Chambers was trying to turn his cruiser around when the accident occurred.
There were two people in the pickup truck at the time of the accident. They are hospitalized, but their conditions are unknown.
Chambers' older brother is a St. Louis County officer and his father is a retired officer.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
This is the first Cahokia police officer to die in the line of duty.
