WALLED LAKE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A 20-year veteran with the Livonia police department was shot and killed Monday night by a suspect trying to escape arrest.
48-year-old Larry Nehasil died after taking a bullet as he was chasing down a suspect. That suspect, along with another man, had just broken into a home on Maple near Glenwood in Walled Lake.
Nehasil was conducting surveillance on at least two suspects when they broke into a home. When Nehasil and the officers he was working with went in after the suspects the would-be burglars tried to make a run for it.
One man ran out the front door and was caught. Nehasil chased the other suspect out the back door. Shots were fired and Nehasil was hit. He did not survive.
The suspect also took a bullet and died.
Livonia's police chief said this was the first time an officer had been killed in a violent confrontation in the line of duty in the department's history. He says his officers are devastated by the loss.
According to the chief Nehasil worked in the deparment's intelligence unit, monitoring and conducting surveillance on dangerous criminals.
Nehasil also served with the Wayne County Sheriff's department.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
