Lincoln City officer critically shot during traffic stop; search underway near Waldport
A Lincoln City police officer is fighting for his life after being shot during an overnight traffic stop, and a massive multi-jurisdiction law enforcement search for the shooter this morning will postpone the opening of Waldport schools for two hours.
The 45-year-old officer remains in critical condition after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds while stopping a speeder at 11 p.m. along Highway 101 on the south end of Lincoln City. The unidentified driver of the 1984 Dodge sport utility vehicle fled south on the highway.
A section of the highway has been closed since 11:30 p.m. between NW Sandpiper Drive and the Waldport bridge while a multi-agency search takes place for the suspect, who led officers on a high-speed chase until his truck was stopped by spike strips set near milepost 153. While attempting to elude police, the suspect fired several shots but no other officers were injured. Then the man fled on foot just outside of Waldport.
The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, said Oregon State Police spokesman Lieutenant Gregg Hastings. A reverse 9-1-1 call was made to area residents advising them of the search.
The officer was initially transported to North Lincoln Samaritan Hospital and then transferred by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, where next of kin have gathered along with fellow officers and friends.

4 in detroit, 2 in seatle, 1 in oregon, 1 in indiana, 2 + 1 us marshall in florida, and thats just in the last 2 days. Include the 2 fatal in miami on the 20th, and you have 4 fatal in florida in the past 5 days.
