Capt. Daniel Stiles, Uniontown, Ohio PD
UNIONTOWN, Ohio —
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol say that a police officer struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning in Stark County has died.
Daniel Stiles, 46, a Uniontown resident and a captain with the Uniontown Police Department, has been identified as the victim.
Gary Guenther, investigator supervisor at the medical examiner's office, says that the incident occurred just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Kaufman Avenue and Edison Street (State Route 619) in Uniontown, near where Stiles was directing traffic.
The Hartville Fire Department responded as the primary emergency crew.
An OSHP spokesperson says that Stiles was transported to Akron City Hospital, where he died from his injuries at 10:40 a.m.
Highway Patrol Lt. Eric Sheppard tells Fox 8's Dave Nethers that the driver of a 2004 Ford Explorer hit Stiles. The woman, also a Uniontown resident, was apparently on her way to a high school to pick up her child when she struck the captain. Her sport utility vehicle remained at the scene while investigators "mapped" the area. The SUV had obvious front-end damage on the driver's side.
