Jemison officer killed in crash

The Jemison Police Department tells WSFA 12 News, Officer Donald Joshua Newman was tragically killed Saturday night, while responding to an emergency call.

Newman was traveling down Alabama Highway 31, when he lost control of his car, and hit a power pole. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Police Chief Shane Fulmer says heavy rain may have played a factor.

This actually happened a couple hundred yards from my parents house. Officer Newman had just come on duty from his house (Clanton) and was still driving to his JD. He got a call about a MVA north of Jemison involving injuries with childern and they asked him to step up his response. It was raining heavily at the time and he came across a area of the highway that's prone to hold standing water and hydroplanned.

He was 30 and has a 4 year old.
