Athens, GA police officer reportedly killed in shooting

Two Athens-Clarke County police officers were wounded Tuesday afternoon when a suspect fired on them, according to Athens police, and news outlets are reporting one of the officers died.

Athens-Clarke County police Athens-Clarke County police identified the suspect as Jamie Hood, 33. He's 5-foot, 9 inches and 175 pounds.

Channel 2 Action News Authorities were on the scene Tuesday in Athens after two Athens-Clarke County police officers were shot several miles from the University of Georgia campus.

The shooting happened near Sycamore Drive and Atlanta Highway, about three miles west of the University of Georgia.
Police were looking for a barefoot, heavyset, black man in blue shorts and a light colored T-shirt with a design on the front. The Oconee County Sheriff's Office, which is participating in the manhunt, identified the suspect on the sheriff's Facebook account as Jamie Hood, 33. He's 5-foot, 9 inches and 175 pounds.
Police said he may be in a silver Geo Prism with the numbers 375GHX on the tag. The car was spotted about a mile west of the shooting and then northeast of the university campus, near the Georgia 10 Loop.

An additional news story:

One police officer was shot and killed and another badly wounded Tuesday while searching for an apparent carjacking suspect in a Georgia college town, prompting a large-scale search for the man, authorities said.

Senior Police Officer Tony Howard stopped a Chevrolet Suburban just before 1 p.m. Tuesday in Athens when a passenger got out of the SUV and shot and wounded Howard, police said.

The driver of the Suburban was taken into custody, but the passenger ran from the vehicle and encountered another senior officer, Elmer "Buddy" Christian, according to authorities. He then shot and killed Christian in his patrol car, police said in a statement.

Howard underwent surgery at a hospital later Tuesday, police Capt. Clarence Holeman told The Associated Press. Police said the officer was expected to recover from his gunshot wounds but they did not provide details about his condition.

My heart and prayers go out to Buddy's family and I pray a speedy and full recovery for Tony.

Athens Clarke-County police officer Elmer 'Buddy' Christian 34, was married with two young children.

Investigators said they believe Hood was using cocaine and that he was armed during the stand off, Mr Keenan said.

Quinton Riden, one of the hostages, said Hood did not threaten them or treat them badly during the ordeal. He said he and Hood are acquaintances.
He said: 'Jamie didn't do no harm to none of us. He treated us like family.

So according to that statement you would call a person who kills a cop, refuses to let you and your family go, including an infant and 13 year old, and has a standoff with law enforcement.......Uncle?
