Devon's chief constable has paid tribute to a 37-year-old officer killed on his motorcycle as he rode to work.

Sergeant Paul Hutchinson, a neighbourhood beat officer at Exmouth, was killed after colliding with a van near Ottery St Mary on Thursday.

Chief Constable Maria Wallis said: "Paul inspired those around him and was well known and respected locally."

A 25-year-old Exmouth man has been bailed on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Ms Wallis said that Mr Hutchinson was a "very enthusiastic officer with a great sense of humour, and nothing was too much trouble for him".

"He will be greatly missed by his family and colleagues and our thoughts are with them at this time," she said.
