Remembering Deputy Michael Shannon
Nine years ago today at 10:49 a.m., Deputy Michael Shannon's life was taken from him. He wasn't scheduled to be on duty at that time but he had been in court testifying. After court, instead of taking the opportunity to return home, he stayed at the Sheriff's Department talking with another deputy. The call came in of a man threatening workers with a gun. Deputy Shannon knew this was a dangerous call and went anyway.
I was home with my girls at the time and received a call from a relative who had been listening to her scanner. She told me that an officer had been shot and then later called to tell me he died.
We are just as stunned and saddened today as we were 9 years ago. How anyone could kill an innocent person, especially a police officer, is beyond me.
We will never forget March 7, 2003. We certainly will never forget Deputy Michael Shannon.
Deputy Sheriff Michael Eron Shannon, Adams County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin
