Cold Spring, MN Officer down
A Cold Spring, MN Officer was shot and killed late Thursday night. Sounds like it was a welfare check gone bad. I haven't really heard any details about what happened, but just a reminder that nothing is "routine" in this line of work.
Thoughts and prayers to the Officer killed, his family, and his co-workers.
Rest in Peace Brother. We have the watch from here.

Rest In Peace my Brother. May God grant you eternal rest and may He also look over your family and grant them peace now, in their most extreme moment of sorrow.

Just an update on what I've seen and heard locally on the news and at the office -
He was responding to a welfare check for a suicidal male. He and his partner went earlier in the night and couldn't locate the person in question, so they went back a few hrs later to try again. Sounds like he was shot in an ambush as he got out of his car in an alley behind the residence. The apt. he was responding to was above a bar. He was wearing his vest.
The bar was evacuated by the police a short time later. One of the bar patrons (take it for what it's worth) reported to the news seeing Ofc. Decker on the ground, deceased, with a gunshot wound to his head as he left the bar for the evacuation. Later news reports said he had been shot twice.
A search was conducted in the area and the suspect was taken into custody in his bed in the apartment above the bar. Witnesses reported the police were looking for a sawed off shotgun. The murder weapon still hasn't been located. Several other guns were found in his apartment. A friend of the suspect's reported to the news that he'd taken a CCW class in January 2012 (ugh). Friends and relatives of the suspect reported being with him recently (earlier in the day even) and that he had been fine and nothing suspicious was noted.
The suspect has prior dealings with LE, but they were mostly traffic related. He had a prior disorderly conduct conviction.
Ofc. Decker was married with 4 kids under the age of 10 from a prior marriage.

The MN chapter of Wives Behind the Badge have set up a toy drive for the christmas gifts for his children if anyone is interested. There are also several ways to donate to the family.

May he rest well. My heart goes out to his family, department and community.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.
