VPSO Thomas O. Madole
VPSO's are often the only law enforcement presence in Alaska villages. They have minimal training and are not armed with firearms. Yet they are first responders doing a lot of what you and I do, on their own.
The Village Public Safety Officer in the western Alaska village of Manokotak was shot and killed on Tuesday, and 42-year-old man is in custody, according to Alaska State Troopers. The VPSO was identified by troopers as Thomas O. Madole, 54. He's one of two VPSOs in the village and had been assigned to the village since August 2011, troopers said.

It still kills me that they don't allow those officers to arm themselves.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

May he rest well in Elysian Fields.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.
