Norfolk, VA policeman shot and killed overnight

This is the third officer Virginia has lost in a month And Norfolk lost one not that long ago, I believe.

    From NBC12 News

A Norfolk police officer was shot and killed around 11:30 last night. Authorities say the officer was responding to a call of a man being shot.

When he showed up, witnesses say a confrontation ensued followed by gunfire.

Emergency crews then rushed the officer to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

When other police arrived at the scene, they took one person into custody, but there's no word on what charges that person faces.

Police also used pepper spray at the scene, hitting at least six people.

The officer's name has not been released yet.

Details are beginning to trickle in about the fourth Virginia police officer killed this month. Several news organizations in Hampton report a plain-clothes officer was shot to death by another officer in Norfolk late Sunday night.

Flashing blue lights and dazed police officers completely enveloped a neighborhood near downtown Norfolk Sunday night. Police say the slain officer responded to a call about a shooting victim on Nicholson Street just after 11 PM.

One person was taken into custody in connection with that incident. But at some point, it appears a confrontation erupted about a block away between police and the victim's family.

One witness says about half a dozen people were pepper sprayed.

When the bullets stopped flying, the veteran officer had been hit, leaving his fellow officers pacing outside the hospital, anticipating the worst. Norfolk Police spokesman Chris Amos says shortly after the officer was transported to the hospital, he was pronounced shortly after arrival. Amos says, “He died from his injuries.”

A man who was grazed in the head by a bullet was taken into custody.

Norfolk Police spokesman Amos says, "A person was taken into custody, I think a couple of guns were in that person’s possession. What he was involved with, we don’t know.”

This officer's death comes less than a year after another Norfolk officer died in the line of duty. Stanley Reaves of Chesapeake was killed in October.

The last few weeks have been tough for police departments around the state. Two officers died when a gunman opened fire at a police station in northern Virginia two weeks ago. In Chesterfield, Officer Gary Buro was killed earlier this month during a domestic call in the county.

    More info -

We're learning more details about the fourth Virginia police officer killed in the line of duty this month. Norfolk Police have now identified the officer as 25-year-old Seneca Darden.

Our Hampton Roads affiliate is reporting Darden was working a burglary detail in plain clothes. He apparently had his weapon drawn when he was shot to death by another officer who didn't recognize him.

Seneca Darden was a four year veteran of the force. The uniform officer who shot him is on administrative assignment.

My thoughts go out to all of the officers and their families. I sincerely hope they get all of the support they need to get through this time.
