Escaped prisoner blamed for second fatal shooting

An escaped prisoner from the Montgomery County Jail is now being blamed for the second fatal shooting of a law enforcement officer. Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Witt says Cpl. Eric D. Sutphin was shot this morning when he came upon William Charles Morva.
Officers have been searching for Morva, 24, a Chesterfield County native, who escaped from hospital in Blacksburg yesterday. Police say Morva took a deputy's gun yesterday and shot to death an unarmed hospital guard, then fled.
Morva was taken to the hospital after he suffered a sprained wrist and leg.
He in jail awaiting trial on charges of trying to rob a Blacksburg deli. His trial was set for later this week.
Morva was spotted this morning on Huckleberry Trail near Virginia Tech. The Tech campus has been put on lockdown on this, the first day of classes. Lieutenant Vincent Houston with the campus police department says there were several sightings of Morva on campus after the shooting.
Corporal Sutphin was a 13-year veteran law enforcement officer and had been a deputy with Montgomery County for three years. He is survived by his wife and twin daughters, and his mother.
