Motorists traveling Del. 9, Del. 141 and Del. 48 in the New Castle, Newport and Greenville areas may experience traffic delays Thursday during a funeral procession for state police Senior Cpl. Antonio DiAlessandro.

DiAlessandro, 38, of Middletown, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Saturday following a 2-year battle with advanced lung disease.

A church service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church at Fifth and Harmony streets in New Castle, with burial following at Cathedral Cemetery off Del. 48 (Lancaster Pike).

State police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh said between noon and 1 p.m. the processional will leave New Castle along Del. 9 (New Castle Avenue) south to Del. 141 (Basin Road), north to Del. 48 (Lancaster Pike) and east to the cemetery.

Motorists traveling in these areas are urged to take alternate routes.

Uniformed police officers will be stationed at intersections along the route directing traffic.

During his police career, DiAlessandro was honored as the Troop 3 Trooper of the Year in 2000, the Delaware State Police Valor Award in 2001, the Exceptional Performance Award in 2002, and the Life Saving Award in 2005.

State police Col. Thomas F. MacLeish said DiAlessandro’s service as a state trooper was “always characterized by loyalty, fearless performance of duty and faithful and honorable devotion to the principles of the Delaware State Police.”

He is survived by his wife Angela and his sons, Mario and Angelo.
