And yes, Americans are that stupid. But I'd also wager folks in other countries are just as stupid. Stupidity is everywhere, and I agree with Jack that part of it is government schools.

Well if this is going to be a political thread I'm back for more. No, not to trade jabs, sadly, this time it'll be a self inflicted wound.

And yes, Americans are that stupid. But I'd also wager folks in other countries are just as stupid. Stupidity is everywhere, and I agree with Jack that part of it is government schools.

Stupidity IS everywhere, no doubt about that. Culturally we accept it, nay, celebrate it, like no other. I'll elbow my way to the head of the line to register a complaint about public schools, but those countries kicking our asses on test scores have public schools too. More socialistic with less local control - and they're still doing better. Is it because their governments are smarter? No. While immigrants do pull down the scores, our white kids aren't keeping up either.

Want to teach little Johnny self esteem? Keep score in sports, don't try to ban booing (and cheering) to make sports more friendly, don't pass him along to the next grade and if he fails, chew his ass and make him learn. LET kids fail. That's the only way they'll want to win.

And its the only way they'll get the notion failing sucks. That's another thing our culture doesn't teach them.

Meanwhile find me the analogue for "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader" on the televisions around the rest of the world. If there is one I bet the people are ashamed rather than amused when they're not.
