Why Can't I Sign In Normally
In fact, why do I have to sign in at all? I checked Remember Me when I joined, and I've never had to sign in since. (I haven't emptied my cookies) Until tonight. Then when I signed in, it said welcome to me, and then it brought me right back to the sign-in screen. The only way I could sign in was to start a new thread. A different sign-in screen popped up and this time it worked. But then I didn't post and instead went to another page, and I was suddenly signed out again.
I hope you can understand my description of what's happening.

That happens to me every single time I try to log in from campus. The only way I can make it work is to initiate something (a thread, PM, etc..), then it makes me sign in AGAIN and generally will work after that.
I sign in just fine from home, so maybe it's something to do with the servers acceptance of different locations?

You can sign in from the homepage and you can also sign in when you attempt to post.
You wont have anymore problems once you log back in, until you clear your cookies again.

Thanks, Indy. The bizarre thing is that I'm on my laptop in my bedroom as usual. But it apparently thinks I'm at a different location. Maybe I AM at a different location but I just don't realize it!!! This is spooky.

I don't remember changing my security settings. Is it possible to do that accidentally?
-
03-13-06, 12:49 AM #7Indy GuestMaybe there was an automatic update? My security stuff routiney updates itself automatically (virus scans and whatnot) and it'll adjust the security levels sometimes if I'm not paying attention when I say "update."

No, unfortunately I have not. But now I'm considering it.

I generally clear my cookies, temporary files, and history on a regular basis. They take up space and you don't need them. Since I clear my cookies and the other unnecessary files I have to log in on the home page. I click remember me and I stay logged in until I clear my cookies again.

A Smile
A smile cost nothing, but gives so much.
It enriches those who receive it,without making poorer those who give.It takes but a moment, but the memoryof it sometimes lasts forever.
None is so rich or mighty that hecan get along without it,and none is so poor but thathe can be made rich by it.
A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friendship.
It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed,or stolen, for it is something that is of novalue to anyone until it is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile.Give them one of yours, as none needs a smileso much as he who has no more to give.

Well, it's possible that I deleted my cookies without realizing. Everything is going okay now so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Good!
Clearing your cookies, temporary files and history won't do anything to your computer except free up space. So you might want to consider doing that more often.

It's doing it to me again. The only way I can sign in is to post. Oh well, that's okay.

If your not logging in from the home page, then I don't think you are clicking on remember me.
You mentioned your security settings are at medium is there anything else that needs to be checked or changed to allow you access?

Hmmm, I just tested the new reply while I was logged out. Of course it won't allow you to post a reply until you are logged in. So a log in box pops up, after you enter your user name and password there is a box that is unchecked called remember me. Mark that box and see if that takes care of your issue.
Which browser are you using? Internet Explorer or FIrefox?

03-14-06, 08:09 AM #20When you first joined, you clicked on remember me. Since you didn't clear your cookies until the date of this thread you were without problems. Which is how it should be and has been for you. Then you cleared your cookies. That erased your original registration. By clearing your cookies it logs you out. When you decided to visit the forum you were no longer logged in. Not quite sure what you did next. Anyhow Signal_W said you can either click on "Home" page to log in or when you go to reply or post a thread you will be prompted to log in again. Either area to log in has the feature "remember me" that needs to be checked.

You mentioned you were prompted to log in again after you cleared your cookies. You did sign in from the new post you started and you remained there for a bit. Then you decided to visit elsewhere on the forum. At that point you were logged off again and had to log in again. I have not read that you clicked on remember me again. I did read thou that you questioned why you would need to click on "remember me" again since you clicked on that when you first registered. The answer is each time you clear your cookies it erases your tracks so you need to click on remember me each time you log back on.
From what you wrote I think you just need to click on "remember me."
Good luck!
