Whats Your Thoughts on a Chat Room?

Brad and I have discussed adding a chat room in the past but we decided against it for several reasons. The main reason was that we couldn't find any chat software we liked that was reasonably priced. We also felt that adding a chat room may actually take away from the board because users would communicate more in the chat rooms than they would on the message board.

Since we have had several users suggest a chat room we decided to re-look the issue and actually found a chat software we like, its very similar to Yahoo chat, and it is at a reasonable price. What we would do is set up two chat rooms, one in the public area and one in the private area. Users will only be able to access the chat room as themselves and no guests would be able to enter.

So we need your thoughts and votes, we will keep this open for a while so everyone can give their opinion.

I don't really think it would take away from the board, it might actually help keep things on topic, because people can go in there and talk about stupid pointless stuff rather than post it on the board. I'm for it :D .

I like that idea but Im not a big fan off chat facilities. Seems like competition to a forum if you ask me.

They will attract trolls if there are no restrictions. At RP there were a lot of people who frequented the chat room only, like George for one.

If you make it for supporting members only, it would at least eliminate them.

Would also be somewhat dead, since most people don't hang out in the chat rooms often. The more people, the more successful. I think limiting it to registered members allows you to keep out the problems, while still giving it hope of being useful and successful.

Couldn't you just put trolls on ignore which would force them to talk to themselves? They want attention and if you don't give them any they will go elsewhere, no?
