This was developed when Android data plans were unlimited and voice/SMS plans were expensive. So this would save you from using your voice plan to talk.
Now, data is getting expensive with tiered plans. Voice/SMS are generally cheap and not too bad for unlimited. So using your data plan to communicate might not be as wise as it used to be.
My experience is that it was also laggy. YMMV
