Go on welfare in Massachusetts and win a free car

Gov. Deval Patrick went straight to lawmakers this week to defend a program that hands donated cars to welfare recipients with state-funded insurance and AAA memberships.
In a letter sent by Patrick’s Health and Human Services Secretary JudyAnn Bigby, the administration sought to change the minds of many senators pushing to cut the $400,000 initiative, which the Herald reported the governor is expanding.
“It’s a program that saves money and enables people who are on welfare to get to work,” Patrick said yesterday, adding it was former Gov. Mitt Romney’s initiative. “Either we’re serious about getting people off welfare and into jobs, or we’re not.”

Ya know, I'm on the fence on this one. I say give them the car, and if they don't get a job within a month (and keep the job for 8 months/pass probationary period) they have to give it back and pay, through the loss of the welfare check, daily rental fees and insurance costs. How's that for incentive?

Sounds good to me. Where's mine?

Though I could sure use a car as it would make some things a lot easier, I have learned to do without. I have been employed 8 years in my current job, vanpool to work. Some things are more important, like keeping a roof over my head. Not going to go on welfare if I can at all help it.

I don't know, I can kind of see something like what you suggest in rural areas that don't have 24 hour public transportation (although they should still be assessed a fee for the car and the insurance). However, in urban areas where there's plenty of public transportation absolutely not - plenty of people take the bus, subway, or train to and when looking for work.

Agreed, I must live in a sub-rural area, or is it sub-urban? I ride a bicycle a mile to my vanpool pickup / drop off spot. I would use local public transportation but it runs from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm and I need to be on my vanpool by six.

This program is ridiculous, and I can assure you I'm not on the fence here. I hope they're not using my tax dollars or that of working people's tax dollars for this.

You have people with jobs who work hard. They have a raggedy ass car, or they can't afford a car, and take public transportation, walk, ride bicycles, ride mopeds, take a taxi...etc. And you think it's fair to give people on welfare with no jobs, cars? Talk about a slap in the face to working people.

    Exactly Term!!!

People on Welfare are being given handout after handout with no incentive or requirements to end it. They get free or section 8 housing (handout), welfare money (handout), free health care (handout), food stamps (handout), and a lot of them also get free education and child care/day care (handout). Now they want to add to this by giving them free cars and insurance?!?! This is a slap in the face for all hard working individuals who are trying to get ahead on their own in life, but cant buy a vehicle.

And before any bleeding heart liberals bash me for this post.....I know there are some people on welfare who try to get themselves off it as quickly as they can. But lets face it, they are the minority.

Whoa....dude!! What I said was give them the car....and if they are NOT off welfare in a month, take the car back, and take the check while you are at it. It provides an end to a means.

Look at it this way, brother....(I have a little insight, since my department contracts cops to the County welfare offices, and I have worked them for a little while):

Two sets of welfare recipients; the ones that are on it for life with no shame, and the ones that are forced on it in utter shame. We'll talk about the ones that WANT to be on welfare. I have seen them drive to the office in a car much nicer than even I could afford. They get out of the car, and go in. They get whatever they believe they have coming to them, be it money, hotel voucher, food stamps, medicaid, clothing vouchers, etc. (Investigator's note: I have personally seen mothers bring their daughters in on their 18th birthday to teach them how to get welfare) If they don't get what they feel they deserve, they throw a fit. The workers will THEN give them what they want, regardless of police presence. Weird, but true. Throw a fit, get rewarded. They promptly walk out and sell everything for cash. They get in their Escalades, and drive to the next welfare office, and for some reason they have a different name and social security number, and address and kids to go with them. They get more stuff, cash it out on the way to the Escalade, and go to the next one. They go home to their Section 8 housing, and sell their dope, cut up a few stolen cars, and buy things with you and my credit card numbers to return in-store for cash. My thoughts: Give them the car for 2 weeks if they apply for it. At the end of the 2 weeks, they either have a job, or they get nothing from there on out....with biometrics to back it up. Fingerprints, DNA, retina scan, etc. And prosecute them for fraud. See, the County will not prosecute unless they are MAJOR frauds....high-dollar. They only have a very few investigators, and it seems most are either related to the recipients or are ex-recipients themselves. It is a lost cause here in LA County.

Now there are the people that are ashamed to be on welfare. The ones that when they are told they have very little coming to them, they say, "Ok, at least it's something," and walk out to the bus stop. I say give them the car, and after 30 days of not being able to find a job, then they are off welfare and the car is given back. And they are locked out of the system. We know that people like this WILL get a job....be it at McDonalds frying burgers, or maybe even become entrepreneurs.

Both ways, welfare ceases as we know it....a free fuggin ride. We can then keep our hard-earned money. We all know it will stay the same....fuggin free handouts for indefinite periods of time.
