Its not just about the money though:
Madoff screws some 114 investors (and investment groups) and gets 150 years behind bars...
Franklin Raines (admittedly) cooks the Fannie Mae books and screws every taxpayer in the nation, sparking a ripple effect recession in the mortgage market, which in turn brings down half of wall street and all of its investors, and walks (after collecting millions in bonuses)...
What's the difference?
Franklin could bring a lot of political players down with him, while Madoff can't.
"The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money."
- Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America
Tell me not, Sweet, I am unkind,
That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind
To war and arms I fly. - Lovelace
