Summoned to success by President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled Congress approved historic legislation Sunday night extending health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and cracking down on insurance company abuses, a climactic chapter in the century-long quest for near universal coverage.

Widely viewed as dead two months ago, the Senate-passed bill cleared the House on a 219-212 vote, with Republicans unanimous in opposition.

Now, let me get this straight......we've passed a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a president that also is exempt from it and hasn't read it and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke.

What the hell could possibly go wrong?

This is the best thing that has happened to the Republican party, but about the only hope now to rescind the worst parts of the bill is that we can get a veto-proof congress in November, but I don't think Republicans will gain that many seats even though I do think Republicans will retake a majority in Congress and render Obama a lame duck during the 2nd half of his term.

We'll probably have to wait till 2012 and hope we get a Republican President as well as a Republican congress.

Meantime, I'm afraid our insurance premiums and taxes are going to skyrocket to pay for this mess (even the provisions that Republicans agree with, like eliminating pre-existing condition exclusions and banning cancellations and lifetime maximums, will have a large cost associated with them, but the main cost is going to be all the extra people we'll be insuring for free).

Anyone who believes that Medicare reforms will save the predicted amount is nuts - which means the deficit is going to skyrocket, and so will inflation and interest rates I think.

Three thoughts....

1. We just saw that history repeats itself, and a Democratic Socialist will be a one term wonder, just like Carter. The only thing missing is the next Reagan.

2. Every one of us represented by a guild should be prepared to fucking eat it the next time you negotiate your contract, because your employer is going to have the shit taxed out of them for your health plan. I do not know any police department that doesn't offer what the socialists call a "Cadillac Plan," and they will pass that shit on to you.

3. This can and probably will be repealed in early 2011 as the Republicans achieve two thirds or more of the House.

Next up is the immigration reform bill. That'll pass too. Our politic masters believe we can't stay angry for long and we'll forget about these transgressions by November.

There is a poll currently on MSN. 50+ % of respondents are "angry" it passed. 23 or so % are happy. Go there and vote- not that it'll make much of a difference.

AUSTIN -- Fewer than twelve hours had elapsed since federal health care reform legislation passed in congress when Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot called reporters to his office to announce that Texas will join other states in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of federal health care legislation as soon as President Barack Obama signs the bill.
"I like most Americans believe we need to improve the health care system in America,” Abbott said.
However, Abbott believes Congress passed a bad bill.
