In a matter of minutes, 7-year-old Patrick turned from a big brother into a big hero.

On Father’s Day, Patrick found his 1-year-old brother, Liam, unresponsive in the family swimming pool in Johnson County, Texas. Without hesitation, Patrick pulled him out of the water, alerted his mother and then sought neighbors’ help in calling 9-1-1. Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical services personnel arrived minutes later and were able to revive Liam, who was transported to a nearby medical center.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4 and can happen in a matter of seconds.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office personnel were so impressed with Patrick’s quick-thinking and fearless reaction that they nominated him for a sheriff’s commendation award. The nomination will be presented to and voted on by the Sheriff’s Office Awards Committee.

“Our entire Sheriff’s Office family is incredibly proud of Patrick. His selflessness, courage and love for his little brother serve as a powerful reminder that heroes come in all ages and sizes,” Lieutenant Keven George, Uniformed Services Division, shared on the agency’s social media. “Patrick, your actions made a difference when it mattered most. You stayed calm, acted quickly, and helped save a life. We are proud of you, and we thank you for setting such an incredible example for our community.”

The office also confirmed that Liam is expected to make a full recovery.
