The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) on July 28 announced Officers Chris Sullivan, Nicolo DiStefano, Jason Jueckstock, Juan Valencia, Tanner Donnely, Jarrod Valdes, Erick Fuchs, Tyler Hernandez, Hugo Garcia, Shane Carpenter, Andrew Piersons and Jake Ellis, and Sergeants Keith Parsons, Trey Reid, and Todd Lefkowitz of the Chico Police Department in California as the Officers of the Month for June 2026. The officers were selected for their coordinated response during an active shooter incident at a public library, where their rapid actions helped stop a potential mass casualty event and protect members of the community.
On June 22, Chico Police Department officers responded to reports of an active shooter inside the Butte County Library. Upon arrival, officers immediately began responding to the threat, with some officers entering the building to locate the suspect and protect those inside while other officers established a perimeter to secure the surrounding area.
As officers worked to clear the building and locate the suspect, their coordinated response helped contain the situation and prevent further harm. The suspect ultimately attempted to leave the building, where officers were able to take him into custody without further incident.
Investigators later determined that the suspect had planned a larger attack targeting individuals inside the library. The rapid response, teamwork and decisive actions of Chico Police Department personnel helped bring the situation to an end and prevented additional loss of life.
“The response by these officers demonstrates the importance of preparation, teamwork and decisive action during some of the most challenging situations law enforcement officers face,” NLEOMF CEO Bill Alexander said. “Their coordinated efforts helped protect members of the community and prevented what could have been an even greater tragedy. We are proud to recognize these officers for their service and commitment to public safety.”
