(Photo by Donald Kravitz/Getty Images) If there’s one thing every American can do to make themselves safer, accord- ing to FBI Director James Comey, it’s taping some- thing over the cameras in our laptops. “There’s some sensible things you should be doing and that’s one of them,” Comey said during the Cen- ter for Strategic and Interna- tional Studies conference. “You go into any govern- ment office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.” It turns out the cameras can be turned on remotely, and that allows hackers to see things like credit card numbers on pieces of paper that might be in the camera’s line of sight.
