Here’s what it looks like folks. President Trump (like George W. Bush and Barack Obama before him) and his point man Chris Koback will ask the nation’s local law enforcement professionals to forget about police work and do the federal government’s job for them – for free. It didn’t work then and it likely won’t work now. Joining the vast majority of their colleagues nationwide, police in Massachusetts say they won’t be suckered into a no-win situation again based on past experience. According to an article from the Boston Herald, po- lice in Massachusetts say they are more interested in good relations with their im- migrant communities than deportations. The whole “Mexican/ Muslim/Illegals Roundup” stuff Trump was tossing to crowds on the campaign trail has been tried before and it didn’t work out too well. Just ask ex-Sheriff Joe Ar- paio. As a result of lessons learned, many law enforce- ment leaders say they will refuse to cooperate with any “mass roundup” un- der President-elect Donald Trump. “We wouldn’t be part of any effort of any kind of mass roundup,” Lawrence Police Chief Jim Fitzpatrick told Boston.com reporters. He said of immigrants in Lawrence, “We encourage them to feel that their po- lice department in any way shape or form is there for them in times of crisis.” Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes posted a let- ter to his community on the department’s Facebook page saying “civil immigra- tion laws are the primary responsibility of the federal government. This will not I’m telling you Chris [Kobach], they’re not buying it. It turns out W and Obama both tried to do this and they figured out not only do they not get paid and clearance rates tank – they know they’re the ones on the hook when the lawsuits come. One of these jerks even told me the federal government should do its own work and let the cops be cops. It’s freaking crazy! Won’t get fooled again – or will we? Not paying people that actually do the work is an easy way to get rich. But is it a smart way to handle federal immigration enforcement? change as the result of the presidential election.” “I wouldn’t want people to be fearful of our local po- lice,” Kyes said. “If they’re fearful, they won’t cooper- ate. They won’t report it if they’re victims of crimes or witnesses to crimes.” Cambridge police spokes- man Jeremy Warnick said it’s just not police work. “We’re not conducting im- migration-related investiga- tions. It’s not something we do.” This will be an area where it’s very easy to tell the dif- ference between politics, policy and how things work in the real world. Dear Feds- do your own damn job.
