But things are getting complicated. At the time this article was written, we learned that two agencies returning from de- ployment at the reservation are refusing to return. According to a report in the MintPress by Isiah Holmes, Minnesota’s Hen- nepin County Sheriff’s De- partment is among that group. Some Minnesota law- makers are saying that the police response in Standing Rock is “inappropriate” and there is talk that the legislature is considering re- writing legislation to avoid future deployments to in- cidents like the pipeline resistance. “I do not support Sheriff Law enforcement agencies just say no After deployment, agencies refuse to return; two officers turn in their badges in support of protestors Stanek’s decision to send his deputies to North Dakota,” Lt. Governor Tina Smith said. “Nor did we approve his decision to begin with. I do not have any control over the Sheriff’s actions, which I think were wrong, and I believe he should bring his deputies home if he hasn’t already.” But not everyone agreed with the Lt. Governor. Min- nesota State Rep. Tony Cornish condemned Smith for prioritizing the rights of protesters over the needs of law enforcement, saying she should apologize to the cops. But the Wisconsin Dane County Sheriff’s Office was more sympathetic to the protestors making the decision to pull out and not return. Sheriff Dave Mahoney said he made the decision after a wide cross- section of the community expressed their opposition to the deployment. “All share the opinion that our deputies should not be involved in this situation,” Sheriff Mahoney said. Thousands of opponents to the pipeline have flooded Standing Rock to stop the construction. Above: this photo (Getty Images) was taken just before po- lice arrested these four protestors.
