During the struggle, an un- involved bystander who wit- nessed the stop walked up to the officers and opened fire, striking them both in the neck and head. Neither officer had an opportunity to react to the blindside mali- cious attack. It was Wednesday, Janu- ary 31, 1973 when we lost these two Milwaukee sons – two promising officers, loved and respected and still missed by many. The lives of the living changed forever at the hand of the heartless act. The shooter was convicted of two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to two consecutive life sen- tences on June 12, 1973. He is and should remain in prison where he deserves to spend the rest of his liv- ing days. He has never re- pented. Officer Gerald William Hempe served the Milwau- kee Police Department for six years. Officer Charles T. Smith, a young 24 and only eight months on the job when he died.
