That’s why the fallout from the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is getting precious little attention. Unlike the armed rebel- lion, politics rarely makes for good television. But here’s where things stand, aside from the vari- ous prison sentences and lawsuits involving the merry band of freedom fighters that forgot to bring snacks to the “siege of the sad sacks.” First, pressure continues to grow for “authorities” to do something about the sheriff in the area that was allegedly providing aid and comfort to the lawbreakers and pos- sibly acting as a spy for the oath-keeping oafs affiliated with “Team Bundy.” State agencies have started investigations but insiders say they’re likely to go no- where because officials don’t want to turn the sheriff into another anti-government Youtube rock star like Rich- ard Mack. But the real story here is what Cliven and Ammon Bundy’s allies in the senate are trying to pull off. About a month after the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Representative Ja- son Chaffetz (R-UT) intro- duced a bill to abolish the law enforcement capacity of Bureau of Land Manage- ment (BLM) and Forest Service officials. This is of course the wet dream of the Bundy boys and other freeloaders that use public lands to make money but refuse to pay taxes and grazing fees as Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) is promoting legislation that would strip the Bureau of Land Management of any enforcement powers. It’s truly shocking that so many anti-gov- ernment extremists can be found collecting paychecks from taxpayers as they actively fight against their own employers. If you want to be a popular politician, always remember to demonize the government you are a part of well as the cost of snacks. Many sheriffs, the thinking goes, are more sympathetic to millionaire ranchers than they are to the feds, so we could avoid more pathetic scenes like the ones at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by taking the “en- forcement” out of federal law enforcement. The bill, H.R. 4751, is especially concerning con- sidering that there have been five armed takeovers of public lands since 2014 and not a single investigation by Congress into the issue has occurred. And here’s where it gets easy to tell that everything is political. Some of the biggest sup- porters of the anti-govern- ment extremists are collect- ing paychecks as elected officials. That should give everyone a sense of just how much money there is to be made on the “daddy took an oath,” Go Fund Me gravy train. If there weren’t guys like Chaffetz, other hustlers wouldn’t pay it any mind at all. The fundraising letters and emails these folks send out always read like the ones from Joe Arpaio. The letters begin with “Pa- triot, I’m going to cut to the chase, because I really need your help.” Then they tell you where to send your money.
